Cole Parker Randall SMA Research Fund Established at Doernbecher Children's Hospital

It’s with great pleasure, and greater gratitude, that we get to share the news that the Cole Parker Randall Foundation, a family philanthropic foundation established in 2014 by Dave and Shawna Randall, has made a generous grant to OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital and the OHSU Division of Pediatric Neurology to support spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) research led by Dr. Erika Finanger.

Our grant of $50,000 will help to establish the Cole Parker Randall SMA Research Fund within the Doernbecher Children’s Hospital Foundation. With the establishment of this new fund, you can now make gifts in Cole’s honor to the Doernbecher Foundation and the Cole Parker Randall Foundation to continue to help us find a cure for SMA.

As Dr. Barry Russman, OHSU’s pediatrics neurology division head, noted in thanking our foundation’s donors, this extraordinary gift honors Cole and his legacy and advances SMA research, education and advocacy for years to come. “With this generous gift, the Cole Parker Randall Foundation will enable Dr. Erika Finanger to carry out a research project studying the current orthopedic management of patients with SMA as well as its quality of life impact on SMA children,” Russman said. “Behind all of our research is the drive to cure SMA.”

The OHSU Division of Pediatric Neurology is dedicated to providing children and their families with the highest quality and broadest range of pediatric neurological services available anywhere in Oregon. Under the leadership of Dr. Barry Russman, OHSU has become one of the most respected pediatric neurology divisions in the Northwest and nation. The division treats complex neurological disorders and care for, not just diagnose, children with pediatric neuromuscular diseases and their families. Its team has a long history of participation in research projects for spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). OHSU was one of only 15 centers in the United States to participate in the recently completed NIH sponsored trial run through the NeuroNEXT Network for Excellence in Neuroscience Clinical Trials (NeuroNEXT). This study aimed to collect information on biomarkers in spinal muscular atrophy with the goal that this information would be available for use in clinical trials to measure efficacy of new potential therapies. OHSU is also currently the only site in the Pacific Northwest and Western Canada for two ongoing clinical drug trials for children with SMA types 1 & 2.

"There continues to be a considerable need for families and organizations, like the Cole Parker Randall Foundation, to help raise awareness about SMA (Spinal Muscular Atrophy). Public education of SMA is becoming increasingly important, particularly as the clinical studies that are currently underway are showing promising results. "
